Total government revenue this quarter was €33.1 billion, €1.8 billion higher than Q1 2025. This rise is primarily due to an increased taxes take of €1.3 billion, the majority of which arises from an increase of €0.7 billion in income tax and €0.6 billion in VAT.
Indirect taxes, which includes VAT, saw an increase of €0.7 billion when compared to Q1 2025. Direct taxes, which largely comprise of two items, income tax and corporation tax, increased by €0.6 billion (4.5%) in total on the same period in 2025. This is largely down to an increase of €0.7 billion in income tax, offset by a slight decrease of €0.1 in corporation tax compared to the same period in 2025.
Elsewhere, social contributions, of which PRSI receipts are the main component, were €0.5 billion (7.8%) higher than Q1 2025.

At €32.4 billion, total expenditure in Q1 2026 was €1.5 billion (5%) higher than Q1 2025 (€30.9 billion).
This increase was driven by a number of government spending categories, mainly social benefits at €0.8 billion (8.2%) and pay (compensation of employees), which increased by €0.6 billion (6.8%). There was also increases of €0.2 billion in both capital transfers and capital investment (gross fixed capital formation).
Spending on the use of goods and services (intermediate consumption) also saw an increase of €0.1 billion, while interest repayments rose by €48 million when compared to Q1 2025.
