Unadjusted goods exports were €19.5 billion in August 2022, an increase of more than €6.3 billion compared with August last year.
Unadjusted goods imports were €12.5 billion, which was €4.7 billion higher than imports in August 2021.
Seasonally adjusted goods exports were €19.8 billion in August 2022, an increase of €4,136 million compared with July 2022.
Seasonally adjusted goods imports were €13.2 billion in August 2022, an increase of €1,125 million compared with July 2022.
Imports from Great Britain were €2.2 billion in August 2022, while exports to Great Britain were €1.5 billion.

Seasonally adjusted goods exports increased by €4,136 million (+26%) to €19,818 million in August 2022 compared with July 2022, according to preliminary figures.
Seasonally adjusted goods imports increased by €1,125 million (+9%) to €13,182 million leading to an increase of €3,011 million (+83%) in the seasonally adjusted trade surplus to €6,636 million in August 2022 compared with July 2022 (see Table 2). Seasonal adjustment compares month-to-month data by removing fluctuations that may occur due to seasonal patterns in trade.

The (unadjusted) value of goods exports increased by €6,330 million (+48%) to €19,497 million in August 2022 compared with August 2021. The value of goods exports for the period January to August 2022 increased by €32,440 million (+30%) to €139,748 million, when compared with the same period of 2021.
The (unadjusted) value of goods imports increased by €4,687 million (+60%) to €12,491 million in August 2022 compared with August 2021. The value of goods imports for the first eight months of 2022 increased by €25,495 million (+39%) to €90,298 million, when compared with the same period of 2021.
Exports to Great Britain accounted for 8% of total exports in August 2022. The products accounting for the largest share of exports were Chemicals & Related Products, at €655 million and Food & Live Animals at €328 million.
Imports from Great Britain in August 2022 were €2,199 million, which was 18% of the total value of imports. Imports of Mineral Fuels accounted for €863 million, and imports of Chemicals & Related Products were valued at €459 million (see Table 5).
The EU accounted for €8,625 million (44%) of total goods exports in August 2022, of which €3,255 million went to Germany, €2,312 million went to Belgium and €1,283 million went to the Netherlands.
The USA was the main non-EU destination accounting for €5,286 million (27%) of total exports in August 2022 (see Table 4).

Exports of Medical & Pharmaceutical Products increased by €1,614 million (+33%) to €6,527 million in August 2022 compared with August 2021. This represented 33% of total exports.
Exports of Organic Chemicals increased by €3,099 million (+163%) to €5,005 million.
Exports of Food & Live Animals increased by €242 million (+25%) to €1,228 million in August 2022 compared with August 2021.
Exports of Electrical Machinery, Apparatus, Appliances & Parts increased by €266 million (+26%) to €1,286 million (see Table 3).
Imports of Organic Chemicals increased by €1,514 million (+531%) to €1,799 million, representing 14% of total imports in August 2022.
Imports of Mineral Fuels, Lubricants & Related Products increased by €831 million (+142%) to €1,417 million in August 2022 compared with August 2021.
Imports of Machinery Specialised for Particular Industries increased by €368 million (+292%) to €495 million.
Imports of Office Machines & Automatic Data Processing Machines increased by €204 million (+57%) to €560 million.
The value of goods imports for August 2022 excluding SITC 79 (Other Transport Equipment, Including Aircraft) increased by €4,576 million (+65%) to €11,665 million, compared with the corresponding August 2021 figure of €7,089 million (see Table 3).
Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (17 October 2022) released Goods Exports and Imports August 2022.
Commenting on the release, Ciarán Counihan, Statistician, in the International Trade in Goods Division said: “In August 2022, Ireland’s unadjusted exports of goods increased by €6.3 billion to €19.5 billion compared with August 2021. When seasonally adjusted, exports of goods grew by €4.1 billion compared with July 2022.
The unadjusted imports for August 2022 were valued at €12.5 billion, an increase of more than €4.7 billion on August 2021.
Comparing the first eight months of 2022 with the same period in 2021, exports of goods increased by 30%, and the value of imports increased by 39%.
Imports from Great Britain grew by 77% to nearly €2.2 billion in August 2022 compared with August 2021, where the largest increases were in the imports of Mineral Fuels and Chemicals & Related Products.
Exports to Great Britain increased by 59% to €1.5 billion in August 2022, due to an increase in the exports of Chemicals & Related Products.”
