Annual clearances of unleaded petrol for 2023, at around 1.0 billion litres, saw an increase of 8% on 2022 (See Figure 2, Table A, and Table 2).
Annual clearances of autodiesel for 2023, at around 3.6 billion litres, saw an increase of 0.2% on 2022 (See Figure 2, Table A, and Table 2).
Clearances of unleaded petrol in December 2023, at 83 million litres, were 4% higher than in December 2022 (See Figure 1 and Table 1B).
Clearances of autodiesel in December 2023, at 286 million litres, were 4% lower than in December 2022 (See Figure 1 and Table 1A).
Clearances of kerosene for 2023 were 0.4% lower than in 2022. This was the lowest annual clearance figure for kerosene since 2014 (See Figure 2, Table A, and Table 2).
Excise clearances of marked gas oil for 2023 saw a decrease of 4% compared with 2022 (See Figure 2, Table A, and Table 2).
The data used in this statistical release mainly relate to the Revenue Commissioners monthly excise clearance volumes. The use of transport fuels such as autodiesel and unleaded petrol are less seasonal than the use of home heating fuels. Price changes, exceptionally cold weather, and storage capacity (home heating oil tanks) can all combine to create marked variations in the monthly clearances. Levels of activity in the economy and changes in the vehicle fleet composition can affect the volume of clearances of road fuels. See Background Notes for definition of fuel excise clearances.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (08 February 2024) released Fuel Excise Clearances December 2023.
Commenting on the release Paul McElvaney, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division, said: "At 286 million litres, clearances of autodiesel in December 2023 were 4% lower than in December 2022 (See Figure 1 and Table 1A). Looking at annual figures, at around 3.6 billion litres, the annual clearances of autodiesel for the year 2023 were 0.2% higher than for 2022, but were 2% lower than pre-pandemic levels in 2019 (See Figure 2, Table A, and Table 2).
Similarly, 2023 clearances of unleaded petrol, at 1.0 billion litres, were 8% higher than in 2022 but saw a decrease of 3% on 2019 levels (See Figure 2, Table A, and Table 2). Clearances of unleaded petrol in December 2023 were 83 million litres, which was 4% higher than in December 2022 (See Figure 1 and Table 1B).
Annual clearances of kerosene for 2023 were 0.4% lower than in 2022. At 918 million litres, this was the lowest annual clearance figure for kerosene since 2014 (See Figure 2, Table A, and Table 2). Clearances in December 2023 of kerosene were 14% lower compared with December 2022 (See Figure 1 and Table 1D). Kerosene is mainly used as a home heating fuel.
Excise clearances of marked gas oil for 2023 saw a decrease of 4% compared with 2022 (See Figure 2, Table A, and Table 2). Excise clearances in December 2023 of marked gas oil were 21% lower than in December 2022 (See Figure 1 and Table 1C). Marked gas oil is primarily used for off-road purposes such as agriculture and the heating of larger buildings."
