COVID-19 Release Information

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 may have had an impact on some of the indicators (such as emissions to air, transport and energy) in this publication.

4.1 Ireland: Greenhouse gas emissions 1990-2021

After a decline in 2020 associated with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions increased to 62 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2021. This was 5% up on the 2020 figure of 59 million tonnes and 11% higher than the 1990 figure of 55 million tonnes.
