Labour Force Survey

The employment component of this publication is based on the Labour Force Survey which is a continuous nationwide survey of households in Ireland, primarily designed to produce quarterly labour force estimates that include the official measures of employment and unemployment in the state in accordance with International Labour Organisation (ILO) concepts and definitions.

The LFS replaced the Quarterly National Household Survey (QNHS) from Q3 2017. The original QNHS (re-labelled LFS) series from Q1 1998 to Q2 2017 has been adjusted to enable comparability with the new LFS for main headline indicators. The new LFS series is available from Q1 1998 to present.

Further information regarding methodology and definitions are available in the Background Notes of the publication.

Live Register

In March 2020, the Government introduced a range of measures to provide financial support for those whose income from employment was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Ireland. The Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) scheme and the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme (TWSS) were set up and administered by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP) and the Revenue Commissioners respectively. These COVID-19 income supports were originally set up as short-term emergency income supports but they have been extended several times and there have been changes made to the eligibility criteria and how the schemes are being administered. The current indications are that the PUP will continue into 2021 while the TWSS was replaced by the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS) from 01 September 2020. These supports were disseminated as part of the monthly Live Register outputs - for more details see Income Supports.

Earnings and Labour Costs

The Earnings, Hours and Employment Costs Survey (EHECS) is a survey that collects earnings, labour cost, hours and employment data from enterprises each quarter. The EHECS survey provides the basis for the production of earnings and labour costs statistics, which measures the cost pressure arising from the production factor "labour" and provide a detailed picture of the level, structure and short-term development of labour costs in the different sectors of economic activity in Ireland.

The EHECS survey replaced the four-yearly Labour Costs Survey, and also replaced all other CSO short-term earnings inquiries. The EHECS results are comparable across sectors and include more detail on components of earnings and labour costs than was previously available.

Further information regarding methodology and definitions are available in the Background Notes of this publication.

Aviation

Statistics on Aviation are collected under Statutory Instrument (S.I.) No. 10 of 2020 - Statistics (carriage of passengers, freight and mail by air) Order 2020.

The data in this release provides details on the number of passengers classified by arrivals and departures, and by reference to national and international traffic; the number of flights by arrivals and departures and information on air freight and mail (in tonnes). The release also highlights the top routes for each of the five main airports: Dublin, Cork, Shannon, Knock and Kerry.

Further information regarding methodology and definitions are available in the Background Notes of this publication.
