Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (30 October 2024) released Business in Ireland 2022 – Insights on the Lifecycle of Businesses. This is the third in a series of releases providing comprehensive insight and information to aid users in understanding the detailed structure, economic activity, and performance of businesses in Ireland in 2022 and over time (See Editor’s Note below for more details)

Commenting on the release, James O’Rourke, Statistician in the Enterprise Statistics Division, said: "Business in Ireland 2022 - Insights on the Lifecycle of Businesses provides information on the business economy in Ireland. When it comes to the lifecycle of businesses, previously referred to as Business Demography, we can see that in 2022, there was a 5.6% increase in the number of active enterprises compared with 2021 and 10.7% growth in the number of people engaged (See Headline Table and Tables 1 and 2).

The number of people engaged went up in all size classes of enterprises, with the largest upturn seen in those firms employing between 20-49 people, which went up by 16% (See Table 4).

Active Enterprises and Sector Analysis

The number of active enterprises in the Arts, Entertainment & Recreation sector increased by 10.9% between 2021 and 2022, the largest sector increase in this time period (See Table 1).

The Accommodation & Food Service Activities sector had the largest growth in newly active enterprises (enterprise births) with almost nine times more new businesses in 2022 than in 2021. Enterprise births is a term used to describe enterprises that have become newly active through either turnover, employment, or investments (See Background Notes for more details).

There was a significant jump in the number of people engaged in these new enterprises, going up by 90% in the 12-month period (See Figures 8 and 9).

The Other Services sector, which includes the Transportation and Storage sector and the Accommodation and Food Service Activities sector, accounted for 57.4% of enterprises and 55.1% of people engaged. Construction accounted for 19.9% of enterprises, but only 8.6% of people engaged (See Figures 2 and 4).

The number of large (250+ employees) enterprises represented just 0.2% of enterprises but still accounted for 32.1% of people engaged (See Figures 6 and 7).

The Other Services sector which includes the Professional, Scientific & Technical Activities sector and the Transportation & Storage sector, showed the highest number of newly inactive enterprises (enterprise deaths). In this sector alone, 16,481 enterprises ceased activity in 2021, which accounted for or 58.1% of total closures. (Figures 10 and 11).

County Breakdown

Combined, Dublin (131,652) and Cork (40,869) accounted for 44.3% of all enterprises in Ireland in 2022. Leitrim at 2,638 and Longford at 2,649 had the fewest enterprises in the country (See Map 1).

All counties saw a rise in the number of enterprises in 2022 with Dublin having the largest increase at 7.1%, followed by Carlow at 6.7%. Waterford saw the smallest increase at 3.5%.”

Enterprise Survivals, Births and Deaths

This Business in Ireland 2022 - Insights on the Lifecycle of Businesses release relates to the reference year of 2022. However, data on enterprise deaths (newly inactive enterprises) are available up to the reference year of 2021 only, since two complete sets of yearly data are required for an enterprise to be declared a final enterprise death. All annual enterprise births (newly active enterprises) will be followed for five years to assess their survival rate and the resulting effect on employment.

The one-year survival rate (relating to enterprises born in one year and still active in the next year) was 78% for enterprises born in 2021 who were still active in 2022 (See Figure 7 and Table 5).
