Area, Yield and Production of Crops 2025

Cereal production up 15% in 2025

Online ISSN: 1393-6867
CSO statistical release, , 11am

Key Findings

  • Production of the three main cereals (Wheat, Barley, and Oats) increased in 2025 by 299,000 tonnes to 2,311,200 tonnes (+14.9%) when compared with 2024.

  • Yield rose in all three Winter Cereals in 2025 compared with 2024. Winter Wheat had the largest increase in yield at 1.7 tonnes per hectare (+18.9%), Winter Barley at 1.0 tonnes per hectare (+12.9%), and Winter Oats at 0.4 tonnes per hectare (+5.0%).

  • Beans and Peas production in 2025 dropped by 18,600 tonnes (-19.3%) to 77,600 tonnes in comparison with 2024 due to less area planted (-4,200 ha).

  • Oilseed Rape production was down by 7,300 tonnes (-11.0%) to 59,500 tonnes in 2025 even with the higher yield of 5.0 tonnes per hectare compared with 4.1 tonnes per hectare in 2024.

  • Production of Potatoes was 384,900 tonnes in 2025, 4.5% higher than in 2024 (+16,600 tonnes).

  • Potato yield went up in 2025 to 43.1 tonnes per hectare from 39.6 tonnes per hectare in 2024 and 39.2 tonnes per hectare in 2023.

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (01 May 2026) published the Area, Yield and Production of Crops 2025. Commenting on the release Stephanie Kelleher, Statistician in Agriculture Surveys, said: "Overall, there was an increase of 299,000 tonnes (+14.9%) in the production of the three main Cereals grown in Ireland in 2025 compared with 2024. This was due to a rise in the production of Winter Cereals, with Winter Wheat up 268,900 tonnes (+74.7%), Winter Oats by 98,500 tonnes (+152.4%), and Winter Barley by 173,900 tonnes (+49.5%). Some of the increase was offset by a decrease annually in the production of Spring Cereals. Spring Wheat decreased by 18,600 tonnes (-34.7%), Spring Oats by 52,200 tonnes (-30.5%), and Spring Barley by 171,500 (-17.0%).

In 2025, the production of Beans and Peas amounted to 77,600 tonnes, which was 18,600 tonnes (-19.3%) lower than 2024. This was mainly due to a smaller area planted, which dropped by 4,200 ha (-22.2%).

Oilseed Rape production dropped in 2025 to 59,500 tonnes (-11.0%) due to less area planted with Oilseed Rape at 11,800 ha compared with 16,100 ha in 2024 (-26.8%). This was despite an increase in yield from 4.1 tonnes per hectare to 5.0 tonnes per hectare (+21.7%).

Potato production went up by 16,600 tonnes (+4.5%) annually to 384,900 tonnes in 2025. Potato yield rose by 8.9% to 43.1 tonnes per hectare. The area of Potatoes was 8,900 ha in 2025, which was 400 ha (-4.0%) less than 2024.”

Area under Crops

The figures for 2025 show that the area under Cereals rose by 11,900 ha (+4.6%) to 270,800 ha due to an increase in the area under Winter Cereals with the largest increase observed for Winter Wheat which was up by 19,100 ha (+46.9%). There was a drop in the area under Spring Cereals with the largest decrease seen for Spring Barley, down by 22,900 ha (-16.5%). The area under Beans and Peas fell by 4,200 ha (-22.2%) to 14,700 ha in 2025. Oilseed Rape dropped from 16,100 ha in 2024 to 11,800 ha in 2025 (-26.8%). The area under Potatoes was down by 400 ha (-4.0%) to 8,900 ha in comparison with 2024.

Yield of Crops

There was an increase in yield across all referenced crops in 2025 with the exception of the Spring Cereals which decreased slightly. Cereal yield rose 0.8 tonnes per hectare to 8.5 tonnes per hectare (+9.8%) with Winter Wheat showing the greatest increase in yield from 8.9 tonnes per hectare in 2024 to 10.5 tonnes per hectare (+18.9%) in 2025. The yield in 2025 for Beans and Peas, Oilseed Rape, and Potatoes was respectively 0.2 tonnes per hectare, 0.9 tonnes per hectare, and 3.5 tonnes per hectare higher than in 2024.

Production of Crops

Cereal production was up by 299,000 tonnes (+14.9%). Production of each Winter Cereal was up, with the largest increase seen for Winter Wheat which rose by 268,900 tonnes (+74.7%) to 628,900 tonnes when compared with 2024. Production of each Spring Cereal decreased with Spring Barley showing the largest decline down 171,500 tonnes to 839,800 tonnes (-17.0%). The drop in Beans and Peas production of 18,600 tonnes (-19.3%) and Oilseed Rape production of 7,300 tonnes (-11.0%) was mainly due to a decrease in the area sown. Potato production was up from 368,300 tonnes in 2024 to 384,900 tonnes in 2025 (+4.5%), even with the reduction in the area under Potatoes (-4.0%), due to an increase in yield (+8.9%).
