Message from Jennifer Banim, Director General, CSO
The CSO, Ireland’s National Statistical Institute (NSI), is an independent Office within the Civil Service under the aegis of the Taoiseach and is mandated under the Statistics Act 1993 to perform:
The collection, compilation, extraction and dissemination for statistical purposes of information relating to economic, social and general activities and conditions in the State.
The mission of the Central Statistics Office (CSO) is to describe Ireland through the lens of its people, society, economy, and environment. In this way, we aim to achieve our vision of Independent Insight for All, providing critical information and insights that illuminate and inform how we live our lives, the functioning of our society and economy, and the evolution of our environment.
Climate Change is amongst the defining issues of our time, and the CSO plays a key role in the provision of independent and trusted information to support understanding of key dimensions in the evolution of Ireland’s climate, environment, and biodiversity. Consistent with sustainability principles, we aim to continuously improve and enhance our outputs while reducing data collection burden and prioritising sustainable operating principles.
Our Climate Action Roadmaps sets out the targets and the steps we will adopt to satisfy requirements identified under the Public Sector Climate Action Mandate and provided for under the Climate Action Plan 2025, which describes the national ambition over the coming decade in line with the 2020 Programme for Government and the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2021. This mandate requires all public sector organisations to lead by example, achieving energy efficiency targets and reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions.
This iteration of the CSO Climate Action Roadmap affirms and illustrates our commitment through spotlighting activities under the following pillars:
The executive supports committed to highlighting CSO’s Climate and Sustainability obligations and activities
The operational structures established to mobilise our efforts to achieve our targets
The organizational outputs that inform and illustrate Ireland’s challenges and opportunities in supporting sustainable climate action
The CSO is committed to reaching our 2030 targets and I am delighted to support our efforts via the Climate Action Roadmap, which paves the way for the CSO to contribute to Ireland’s wider public sector goals.
Our Facilities Management areas, acting in close collaboration with our Climate Action Team, our Climate Sustainability Champion, Climate Action Sponsor, and most importantly, with our operating Divisions and colleagues, are intensively engaged in a dynamic suite of activities designed to embed climate considerations into every stage of our operational decision making. In this way, we build and reinforce the interplay between how we physically operate and our continuously evolving role in providing independent and trusted insight in this sphere to all stakeholders.
