A CSO Environment Statistics and Accounts Division was created within CSO in early 2015 and staff numbers were increased. Prior to that environment statistics were in the same CSO division as international trade in goods statistics. The creation of the new division was in response to a substantial increase in Eurostat legal and voluntary reporting obligations. Eurostat has developed a series of environmental economic accounts covering areas such as taxes, material flow accounts, the green economy, etc. Eurostat also collects basic data in areas such as energy, waste, and forestry statistics.

The CSO environment division mainly uses existing CSO survey data from areas such as business statistics, national accounts, and census of population. These survey data are often combined with administrative data from the EPA, SEAI, NWCPO, Department of Agriculture etc. The CSO also conducts an annual business energy use survey and a biennial waste generation survey.
