Go to release: Statistics of Port Traffic Quarter 2 2020
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (10 November 2020) published Statistics of Port Traffic for Quarter 2 2020. These figures are based on returns from the Port Authorities.
Today’s publication shows that the number of passengers in Quarter 2 2020 was 88,000 compared to 755,000 in Quarter 2 2019, a decrease of 88.3%. The tonnage of goods handled by the main Irish port in the second quarter of 2020 was 11.0 million tonnes compared to 12.3 million in quarter 2 2019, a decrease of 10.5%.
Commenting on the data, Olive Loughnane, Statistician, said: ‘For the first time the Statistics of Port Traffic release includes data from periods affected by the COVID-19 crisis. The impact of COVID-19 restrictions on passenger numbers travelling through Irish ports is evident in this latest data. The tonnage of goods handled in Irish ports is impacted to a much lower extent and although it decreased in four of the five traffic categories, there was a 5.4% increase in liquid bulk traffic, which includes fuels such as diesel, oil and gas.’
Data from the following ports, Bantry, Cork, Drogheda, Dublin, Rosslare, Shannon and Waterford are included in the release.
