World Statistics Day 20th October 2015
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) is celebrating World Statistics Day with a number of activities. Firstly, the CSO has partnered with the Portuguese Exploristica team www.exploristica.com to bring Exploristica, an engaging, interactive set of educational games, to Ireland. The CSO has partnered with the Lifetime Labs in Cork to curate this exhibition www.lifetimelab.ie and will launch this project on World Statistics Day. Initially, Exploristica will be exhibited in the Lifetime Labs, but it is easily transportable so it will make a tour of Ireland through regular annual events like the BT Young Scientist www.btyoungscientist.com and SciFest www.scifest.ie as well as being curated in other cities.
The CSO will publish our Statistical Yearbook of Ireland 2015 at 11.00 a.m. on World Statistics Day. The yearbook presents a comprehensive picture of Ireland today. It provides detailed information, tables and graphs across a wide range of topics. These include the population, labour market, education, crime, the economy, agriculture, industry, services, prices, housing, and the environment. The yearbook is published as a mobile friendly web publication.
Finally, the CSO will partner with University College Cork to present a series of short presentations on statistical topics of interest. Statisticians will engage the audience with topics like open data and big data and will provide a window to our statistical products and services.
World Statistics Day follows on from the CSO outreach work during Maths Week. This took place last week in Ireland www.mathsweek.ie when over a quarter of a million students engaged in all things mathematical. During Maths Week the CSO Director General, Pádraig Dalton, launched our new CensusAtSchool questionnaire www.censusatschool.ie/en/take-part/questionnaires. Felix Coleman, a CSO statistician, published the findings of CensusAtSchool 2014/2015. Minister Damien English TD, Minister of State for Skills, Research and Innovation launched our statistical poster competition and our app building competition.
