For the 2006 Census, a team of approximately 4,800 temporary field staff were recruited and trained by the CSO to carry out the census field operation.

The team comprised of:

  • 6 Liaison Officers
  • 40 Regional Supervisors
  • 400 Field Supervisors
  • 4,400 Census Enumerators

Recruitment of Census 2006 Enumerators

In excess of 15,000 application forms for the post of Census Enumerator were received and applicants were interviewed between 25 January and 7 February 2006.

About 4,400 Enumerators were appointed countrywide to carry out the census fieldwork over an 8-10 week period during March-May 2006. The work mainly involved the delivery and collection of census forms to and from every household in an assigned area. The work was conducted mainly in the evenings and at weekends. The positions were temporary and part-time.

Full training was given to Enumerators and average earnings were €2,200.
