An intensive public awareness campaign on TV, radio, newspaper and outdoor was conducted during the month leading up to Census Day. This campaign which was open to public tender was handled for CSO by McCann-Erickson.

The advertising commenced at the launch of the fieldwork on 29 March and reached a peak on Census Day. Its purpose was to encourage and remind people to fill out their census forms that night and "BE PART OF THE BIGGER PICTURE". The post census day advertising was to remind the public to have their completed census forms ready for collection by their enumerators.

The campaign was spear-headed by television commercials which were broadcast on RTE, Network 2, TV3, TG4, SKY, E4, Paramount and MTV.  On RTE and Network 2 the ad was available on the subtitling service via Aertel Page 888.

The radio advertising was led by a sixty-second ad explaining the purpose of the census. download here (MP3 2,365KB) .  This ad was broadcast between 29 March and 16 April on all national and regional stations.  One out of every six ads broadcast during this period was in Irish. download here. An ad inviting people who had not yet received their census form to contact the CSO so that arrangements could be put in place to have a form delivered to them was also broadcast. download here.
