Meeting the challenging processing targets for Census 2006 involves guillotining, scanning and automatically reading and checking 15,000 forms every day using 2 guillotines, 7 scanners and large computer servers.
These 15,000 forms being processed each day are being scanned and converted into 360,000 computer images which, with the use of Optical Character Recognition (OCR), are being converted into readable data to be checked and coded by the computer with the assistance of 80 CSO staff.
Ultimately some 36 million computer images will be generated, one for every page of every census form. Tabulation software will be used to summarise data for publication on paper and the World Wide Web.
