In June 2017 Padraig Dalton, Director General Central Statistics Office (CSO) and Kieran Feely, Registrar General of the General Registrar Office (GRO), signed a Memorandum Of Understanding between the CSO and the GRO (PDF 653KB) to establish a closer working relationship and to allow both organisations to fulfil their respective obligations with regard to vital statistics data.

The GRO operates under the Department of Social Protection and acts as the central civil repository for records relating to vital life events in Ireland. The CSO publishes data for the Minister of Social Protection in accordance with the provisions of Section 2 of the Vital Statistics and Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act, 1952, with the provisions of Section 73 of the Civil Registration Act 2004 and the Government Order (SI No. 831 of 2007).
