The All-Island Tourism Statistics Liaison Group was formally established in September 2011, replacing the Tourism Statistics Liaison Group which was established in 2009. The broad aim of the group is to improve communications between all the key stakeholders in both Ireland and Northern Ireland.

All Island Tourism Statistics Liaison Group - Terms of Reference

Purpose:

The All Island Tourism Statistics Liaison Group will play a key role in assessing the needs and priorities of key users of statistics on Tourism. It will also facilitate the effective exchange of information on all areas of Tourism statistics between the main producers and users of such statistics.

Role:

The role of the Group shall be to:

  • ensure that the statistical systems can meet policy requirements in the domain of Tourism statistics  
  • promote the development of more harmonised statistics on Tourism on an Island of Ireland basis
  • provide information updates on the progress of all Tourism related surveys
  • discuss all aspects of Tourism statistical outputs such as timeliness, relevancy of data, format, future plans etc
  • promote best practice in the compilation of statistics on Tourism
  • consider progress on key measurement issues such as the development of TSAs and the economic measurement of Tourism
  • consider alternative sources for statistics on Tourism
  • share information on other relevant areas covering Tourism statistics. Participants of the Group may be invited to make contributions and prepare papers/research
  • discuss other statistical and measurement issues
  • discuss the key needs of users

Membership and Organisation:

Central Statistics Office (CSO) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) will be jointly responsible for organising meetings and will rotate chairing of the Group. Other core participants of the Group shall include one representative from each of the participating organisations. Key members of the Group will be the main national Tourist bodies on the Island, Failte Ireland (FI), Tourism Ireland (TI) and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB), the main Government Departments responsible for Tourism (DAST and DETI) and the Irish Tourism Industry Confederation (ITIC). Participation of the Group may be extended, depending on the subject being discussed, to include a participant from an organisation which is not formally a member of the Group. 

Frequency of Meetings: 

The Group shall meet at least once a year. Other meetings, at a technical level with more limited membership may take place. Such technical meetings will deal with statistical and data issues. Membership will be confined to the key producers of statistical data, namely the Central Statistics Office, NISRA and Failte Ireland. These meetings will be deemed to be formal meetings of this Group and the minutes of such meetings will be circulated and published.
