The Consumer Price Index is designed to measure the change in the average level of prices (inclusive of all indirect taxes) paid for consumer goods and services by all private and institutional households in the country and by foreign tourists holidaying in Ireland.
The classification used in the CPI is based on a version of the European Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose Adapted to the Needs of Harmonised Indices of Consumer Prices Version 2 (ECOICOP Ver. 2). The ECOICOP Ver. 2 classification breaks consumer expenditure into thirteen different divisions covering a comprehensive range of consumer goods and services.
