On 30 June 2020, the Department of Health signed an agreement with Three Ireland to secure an anonymised and aggregated mobility dataset.  This contract met a necessary and urgent requirement for data to support the COVID-19 response. This dataset has been helpful in informing modelling work carried out by the Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group to advise the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET). The data, alongside a wide range of other data, helps NPHET to understand mobility trends that have emerged as a result of COVID-19, and to assist the COVID-19 response.

The Department has since terminated this agreement (effective 1 April) and has proceeded with a full government procurement process, published on the eTenders website, for the purchase of a similar mobility dataset to support the COVID-19 response, based on anonymised mobile network operator data.

The CSO has concluded publication of the first COVID-19 Inisght: Mobility During the Pandemic series, which was based on the original dataset.
