Ireland’s trade with North and Central America is dominated by the USA, which accounted for €54 billion, or 89% of total exports to the region, and €23 billion, or 89% of total imports from the region in 2023.
Exports of Organic Chemicals and Medical & Pharmaceutical Products to the USA totalled €36 billion, which is two-thirds of the total value of exports to the USA in 2023. Imports of aircraft accounted for €6.8 billion, or 30% of total imports from the USA in 2023.
Excluding the USA, exports to the region were almost €7 billion. Of the other countries in the region, Ireland’s biggest export partners in 2023 were Canada, with exports of €4.1 billion, and Mexico with exports of €2.6 billion.
Imports from North and Central America, excluding the USA, were €2.9 billion, of which there were €1.8 billion from Mexico, and €782 million from Canada.
We also imported over 83,000 tonnes of bananas from Central America, 9,000 tonnes of pineapples from Costa Rica and 114,000 litres of rum from the Bahamas.
