Use of public transport at highest level this year

CSO statistical release, , 11am

Car traffic continues to rise, but still below 2019 levels

Source: Transport Infrastructure Ireland

Traffic count data has increased from the beginning of the year, since the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions. In Dublin and selected regional sites car traffic volumes increased by 38% and 39% respectively between the first week of January and the last week of May. For the week beginning 23 May 2022 (week 21), car traffic volumes in Dublin were only 4% lower than the same week in 2019. For regional traffic, the same pattern occurred, with the value for week 21 being 5% lower than the same week in 2019. See table 1.1, figure 1.1 and figure 1.2.

HGV traffic count data was broadly in line with 2021 values, and is up on 2019, with Dublin showing a 7% increase for week 21 versus the same week in 2019. The regional data showed a 6% increase for the same period. See table 1.2, figure 1.3 and figure 1.4.
