This chapter presents information on the tourism sector of the Irish economy. The tourism and travel information covers earnings and expenditure from tourism and travel as well as detailing the number of trips to Ireland classified by area of residence and reason for journey. Details of foreign and domestic travel by Irish residents classified by region visited and reason for journey are also included.

In 2014, 7.6 million overseas trips were made by non-residents to Ireland compared to 7.0 million trips in 2013, an increase of 8.9%.  Residents of Great Britain took almost 3.2 million trips to Ireland during 2014, an increase of 235,000 trips (8.0%) compared to 2013. The average length of stay in Ireland by all overseas travellers fell marginally from 7.3 nights in 2013 to 7.2 nights in 2014.  The most important overseas markets in terms of non-fare expenditure within Ireland in 2014 were USA and Canada (26.4%) and Great Britain (24.9%).

The number of overseas trips to Ireland for the purpose of holiday/leisure/recreation increased by 265,000 trips between 2013 and 2014, to over 3.3 million trips, a rise of 8.7%. During the same period, the number of trips to visit friends and relatives rose by 194,000 trips to 2.2 million trips, an increase of 9.6%.

Excluding fares, expenditure by overseas travellers increased by 8.8% in 2014, from €3,262 million in 2013 to €3,548 million. Of this €3,548 million, 51.4% was spent by overseas travellers for holiday/leisure/recreation purposes, 22.1% by those travelling to visit friends and relatives, 16.5% by business travellers and the remaining 9.9% by those travelling for ‘Other’ reasons.

Almost 6.7 million outbound trips were undertaken by Irish residents in 2014. The average length of stay on outbound trips was 8.0 nights, varying from 7.0 nights within the European Union, 14.2 nights in North America and 23.3 nights in Australia, New Zealand and Oceania. Irish residents spent a total of €5,598.2 million on outbound trips during 2014, over two thirds (69%) of this expenditure was spent within the European Union.

In 2014, Irish residents took almost 7.4 million domestic trips. The average length of stay for domestic trips was 2.9 nights, resulting in a total of 21.2 million bed nights. Holidays accounted for almost half of all domestic trips (49%), while a third (33%) were to visit friends or relatives. Total expenditure by Irish residents on domestic trips for 2014 amounted to €1,464 million with holiday spend rising by 1.4% in 2014 to €852 million.
