The increase in the volume of retail sales from 2016 to 2017

This chapter contains information on the services sector. Data is taken from the Retail Sales Inquiry and the Monthly Services Inquiry. The primary purpose of the Retail Sales Inquiry is to provide a short-term indication of changes in the value and volume (or quantity) of retail sales in Ireland. The Monthly Services Inquiry measures changes in output in the non-financial traded services sector.

The primary purpose of the RSI is to provide a short-term indication of changes in the value and volume (or quantity) of retail sales in Ireland. It provides an accurate and objective measure of retail trading and supplies a valuable guide to consumer spending behaviour in the Irish economy.

In 2017, the volume of retail sales in All businesses increased by 2.9% when compared to 2016, while All businesses excluding motors increased by 4.4%. All sectors showed an increase on 2016 with the volume of retail sales of Furniture and lighting increasing by 16.7% in 2017 with the exception of Other retail sales with a decrease of 9% on the previous year.

The value of the monthly services sector was 3.9% higher in 2017 than in 2016. All sectors showed an increase, the greatest was in the Professional, scientific and technical activities sector, which recorded 11.9% more activity than in 2016. This was followed by an 8.5% increase in the Administrative and support service activities sector.

The increase in turnover in the Services and Distribution sectors in 2016

The Services and Distribution sectors reported an annual increase in turnover of 13.2% from €352.0 billion in 2015 to €398.4 billion in 2016.

Gross Value Added in Services and Distribution increased by 11.8% from €81.1 billion in 2015 to €90.7 billion in 2016.

In 2016, the year on year change in the number of persons engaged showed a 4.9% increase from 1,037,683 to 1,088,732.

The number of enterprises in these two sectors increased by just 0.3% in 2016.
