Seven in ten considered hardware characteristics when purchasing ICT device

Some 85% of internet users said that they considered the price when purchasing their most recent ICT device. Price was by far the most popular consideration when purchasing a new device. The next most important factors considered by internet users ranked in joint second place at 70% were brand, design (look and feel), and size, and hardware characteristics such as storage capacity, processing power, speed, etc.

Note that more than one option could be selected by respondents.

Analysis by age shows that the price of the device was the most important factor for younger persons aged 16 to 29 years (88%) compared with less than three quarters (73%) of older internet users aged 75 years and over.

The device’s storage, speed, processor, etc. were more important factors for males when purchasing a device. Almost three quarters (74%) of males considered these characteristics when buying a new ICT device compared with two thirds (66%) of females.

Analysis by age shows that the importance of brand, design, and size decreases with age. For eight in ten (80%) of younger internet users aged 16 to 29 years, the brand, design, and size were considered important, compared with just over six in ten (62%) of older persons aged 75 years and over. Similarly for hardware characteristics, this factor was most important for people aged 30 to 44 years (75%), followed closely by 74% of younger persons in the 16 to 29 years age group. This compared with just 45% of older persons aged 75 years and over considering the storage, speed, processor, and other hardware characteristics as important when purchasing a new ICT device.

Over one quarter (27%) said that the energy efficiency of the device was a factor that they consider when purchasing a new device, up from 16% in the same period in 2022. Females (28%) were more likely than males (26%) to consider this sustainable factor when purchasing a new device. See Figures 3.1 & 3.2, Table 3.1, and PxStat Tables for comparisons with 2022.

One in seven consider eco-design of the device

The eco-design of the device was important for just short of one in seven (15%) internet users.

The eco-design of an ICT device relates to how sustainable it is. It includes its durability, does it have an easily upgradable or repairable design that require fewer materials, are environmentally friendly materials used for packaging, is it designed for longevity, etc. See Table 3.1 and PxStat Tables for comparisons with 2022.

Importance of take back scheme and extending warranty increase in 2024

Almost one in ten (9%) said that the possibility to extend the life span of the device by buying an extra guarantee or extending the warranty was a factor that they considered when purchasing their most recent ICT device, an increase of three percentage points on the same period in 2022. The existence of a take-back scheme offered by the manufacturer or seller was important for a similar number (9%), an increase of four percentage points on the same period in 2022.

Analysis by age shows that older internet users aged 75 years and over were most interested in take back schemes at 21%, over double that of all other age groups. See Figure 3.2, Table 3.1, and PxStat Tables for comparisons with 2022.
