Services Trade by Activity Sector

The ‘Information and Communications’ sector represented both the largest exporting sector and the largest importing sector in 2020, exporting 57% of total service exports and importing 46% of total service imports

The Information and Communication sector was the largest export sector, exporting €146bn (57%) of total service exports in 2020.
The Financial and Insurance sector and the Administration and Support sector were recorded as the second and third largest export sectors respectively with €35bn (14%) and €29bn (11%) of total service exports respectively.
The Manufacturing Sector also contributed significantly exporting €26bn (10%) of total service exports.
The Information and Communication sector also represented the largest import sector with €150bn (46%) of total service imports.
The Manufacturing Sector formed the second largest activity sector with €123bn (37%) of total imports.
The Financial and Insurance sector recorded imports of €34bn (10%) of total service imports. See table 4.1, figure 4.1 and figure 4.2.

Large enterprises made up €162bn (63%) of total service exports (€256bn) in 2020. They dominated the Information and Communication sector where they provided a sizeable €132bn (52%) of total service exports. Large enterprises in the Manufacturing sector exported €15bn (6%) of total services while large enterprises in the Financial & Insurance sector exported €3bn (1%) of total services.

SME enterprises in the Financial and Insurance sector exported €26bn (10%) of total services while SME enterprises in the Information and Communication sector made up €9bn (4%) of total service exports. See figure 4.3 and table 4.2.

Large enterprises imported €220bn (67%) of total services (€328bn) in 2020. In the Manufacturing Sector and the Information and Communication sector they imported €102bn and €111bn, together importing €213bn (65%) of total service Imports.

SMEs imported €53bn (16%) of total services and in the Financial and Insurance sector and the Manufacturing Sector they made up €27bn (8%) and €11bn (3%) of total service imports respectively. See figure 4.4 and table 4.3.
