  • The Information and Communication sector (J) was the largest export sector exporting €74bn (46%) of total service exports. 
  • Both the Financial and Insurance sector (K) and Manufacturing Sector (C) were recorded as the second largest export sectors with €28bn (17%) and €27.5bn (17%) of total service exports respectively. 
  • The Administration and Support sector (N) also contributed significantly exporting €22bn (14%) of total service exports. 
  • The Information and Communications Sector (J) represented the largest import sector with €88bn (43%) of total service imports. 
  • The Manufacturing Sector (C) formed the second largest activity sector with €71bn (35%). 
  • The Financial and Insurance sector (K) was also significant importing €25bn (12%) of total service imports. See Table 4.1, Figure 4.1 and Figure 4.2.

Large enterprises made up €85bn (52%) of total service exports (€162bn) in 2017. They dominated the Information and Communication sector (J) where they provided a sizeable €69bn (43%) of total service exports. Large enterprises in the Manufacturing sector (C) exported €8bn (5%) of total services while large enterprises in the Financial & Insurance sector (K) exported €2bn (1%) of total services.

SME enterprises in the Financial and Insurance sector (K) exported €23bn (14%) of total services while SME enterprises in the Administrative and Support sector (N) made up €16bn (10%). They made up €5bn (3%) of total service exports in other activity sectors. See Figure 4.3 and Table 4.2.

Large enterprises imported €147bn (72%) of total services (€205bn) in 2017. In the Manufacturing Sector (C) and the Information and Communication sector (J) they imported €55bn and €86bn (27% and 42%) respectively, together importing €142bn (69%) of total services.

SMEs imported €37bn (18%) of total services and in the Financial and Insurance sector (K) and in other activity sectors they made up €21bn (10%) and €7bn (3%) of total service imports respectively. See Figure 4.4 and Table 4.3.
