Irish ports handled 13.1 million tonnes of goods between April and June (Q2) 2022

Key Findings

  • Total tonnes of goods handled by Irish ports in Q2 2022 increased by 1% compared with Q2 2021. 

  • During Q2 2022, 3,085 vessels arrived in the 7 main Irish ports.

  • Dublin port accounted for 63% of all vessel arrivals in Irish ports.

  • Goods forwarded from Irish ports amounted to 4,221 thousand tonnes in Q2 2022.

  • Goods received amounted to 8,919 thousand tonnes in Q2 2022.

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (25 October 2022) published Statistics of Port Traffic results for Q2 2022.  

Commenting on the quarterly figures, Dr Nele van der Wielen, Statistician in the Transport Division, said: “Irish ports handled 13.1 million tonnes of goods in April, May, and June (Q2) 2022. This is an increase of 1% compared with Q2 2021. 

Goods forwarded from Irish ports amounted to more than 4.2 million tonnes in Q2 2022, while a total of 8.9 million tonnes of goods were received.

Great Britain & Northern Ireland accounted for 36% of the total tonnage of goods handled in the main ports by region of trade in Q2 2022. Other EU countries accounted for 39% of the total tonnage of goods handled in the main ports.

The total number of vessels arriving during Q2 2022 in the 7 main Irish ports increased by 2% when compared with Q2 2021. Dublin port accounted for 63% of all vessel arrivals in Irish ports.”

Tables and figures

The tonnage of goods handled increased in two of five traffic categories in Q2 2022, there were quarterly percentage decreases in Roll-on/roll-off traffic (-0.1%) and Break bulk and other goods (-5.4%).
