Statistics of Port Traffic Quarter 1 2022

Irish ports handled 12.7 million tonnes of goods in Q2 2022.

Key Findings

  • Tonnes of goods handled by Irish ports increased by 4% compared with Q1 2021. 

  • During Q1 2022, 2,746 vessels arrived in the seven main Irish ports.

  • Dublin port accounted for 62% of all vessel arrivals in Irish ports.

  • Goods forwarded from Irish ports amounted to 4,060 thousand tonnes in Q1 2022.

  • Goods received amounted to 8,594 thousand tonnes in Q1 2022.

Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (20 July 2022) published Statistics of Port Traffic results for Q1 2022.  

Commenting on the annual figures, Dr Nele van der Wielen, Statistician in the Transport Division, said: “Irish ports handled 12.7 million tonnes of goods in Q1 2022. This is an increase of 4% compared with Q1 2021. 

Goods forwarded from Irish ports amounted to nearly 4.1 million tonnes in Q1 2022, while a total of 8.6 million tonnes of goods were received. See table 2.”

Further commenting on the published Statistics of Port Traffic, Dr Nele van der Wielen said: “The total number of vessels arriving during Q1 2022 in the seven main Irish ports decreased by 3% while the gross tonnage of all arriving vessels decreased by 0.5% to 62,055 thousand tonnes. See table 1.

Dublin port accounted for 62% of all vessel arrivals in Irish ports and for 49% of the total tonnage of goods handled in Q1 2022.

Great Britain & Northern Ireland accounted for 36% of the total tonnage of goods handled in the main ports by region of trade in Q1 2022. Other EU countries accounted for 41% of the total tonnage of goods handled in the main ports. See table 5.”

Tables and figures

The tonnage of goods handled increased in two of five traffic categories in Q1 2022, but there were quarterly percentage decreases in Lift on/lift off traffic (-5%) and Dry bulk (-3%) and Break bulk and other goods (23.%).
