Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (13 June 2025) published the Services Producer Price Index Quarter 1 (Q1) 2025.

The Services Producer Price Index (SPPI) is a business cycle indicator which provides information on the development of prices for numerous services sectors. This information is used for the analysis of inflation and its sources, but also for the deflation of value measures in the service industry (See Background Notes).

Commenting on the release, Diarmuid Martin, Statistician in the Prices Division, said: "Services Prices charged to businesses in January, February, and March (Q1) 2025 were on average 2.8% lower when compared with the same quarter in 2024 (See Table 1 & Figure 1). This marks the first time there has been a negative annual change in the current series of 2021=100. In comparison, for Q1 2024 the Services Producer Price Index reported an annual percentage change of 4.3% (See Table 1).

A decrease of 10.6% was recorded in the Real Estate & Rental sector, however this change was contrasted with a price growth in a range of services sectors including Employment & Human Resource Activities (+6.3%), Architecture & Engineering (+6.1%), and Security & Building (+5.8%), when compared with the same quarter in 2024 (See Table 2b & Figure 2)."
