Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (10 April 2026) published Monthly Services Index February 2026 (Provisional) and January 2026 (Final).

Commenting on the release, Tommy Allen, Statistician in the Enterprise Statistics Division said: “In February 2026, the overall index of All Services showed monthly decreases in both value (-1.6%) and volume (-1.8%).

The largest monthly value decreases were recorded in Wholesale & Retail Trade (-4.0%) and Administrative & Support Service Activities (-3.9%). The sector showing the largest monthly value increase was Transportation & Storage (+4.1%). In volume terms, the largest monthly decreases were observed in Administrative & Support Service Activities (-6.7%) and Wholesale & Retail Trade (-5.2%). Transportation & Storage (+4.0%) recorded the largest monthly volume increase. The Modified Monthly Services Index, which represents All Services excluding Information & Communication, was down by 0.5% in value and by 0.8% in volume when compared with January 2026.

Looking at changes on an annual basis, the All Services index was 10.5% higher in value and rose by 8.8% in volume terms in February 2026 when compared with February 2025. This increase was largely driven by the strong annual performances of the Information & Communication sector, up 17.9% in value and by 18.8% in volume. The Modified Monthly Services Index shows All Services excluding Information & Communication fell by 0.2% in value and decreased by 6.8% in volume when compared with February 2025."

Seasonally Adjusted Value and Volume Index for Monthly Services

Figure 1 shows the seasonally adjusted value and volume indices for the Monthly Service Index, while Table 1 highlights both the monthly and annual percentage change in both value and volume. Value indices represent turnover, whereas volume indices represent deflated turnover which strips out the impact of price changes. Volume indices show changes in the amount of business activity in the services sector over time.

It should be noted that the significant increase observed since 2024 has been heavily influenced by the performance of the Information & Communication sector. All Services excluding Information & Communication can be observed in the Modified Monthly Services Index (see Figure 3).
