Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (10 June 2025) published Monthly Services Index April 2025 (Provisional) and March 2025 (Final).
Commenting on the release, Tommy Allen, Statistician in the Enterprise Statistics Division said: “In April 2025 the services economy showed significant monthly movements across many of its sectors, with a sharp decline in All Services in both value (-5.2%) and volume (-4.8%) terms. These large movements stand in contrast to the previous month’s figures and show a return to a more stable trend following the significant quarter-end increase observed in March. Short-term volatility can be common in monthly indices, with this in mind the CSO recommends that analysts take a longer-term view of the indices.
The largest monthly value decreases were in Wholesale & Retail Trade (-8.6%) and Information & Communication (-7.8%). The sectors showing the largest value increases were Transportation & Storage (+7.6%) and Professional, Scientific & Technical Activities (+6.7%).
In volume terms, the largest monthly declines were observed in Information & Communication (-8.8%) and Wholesale & Retail Trade (-6.8%), while Professional, Scientific & Technical Activities (+6.8%) and Administrative & Support Service Activities (+6.6) recorded the highest monthly growth.
Looking at changes on an annual basis, the value of All Services was 15.9% higher and was up 14.5% in volume terms in April 2025 when compared with April 2024.
Users should note that this release now includes the Modified Monthly Services Index which provides greater insight into Ireland's services economy."
