Preliminary information for 2021 shows healthcare expenditure of €28.4 billion, an increase of 7% compared to 2020. The growth in spending is due to additional spending by government and private health insurance companies.
The preliminary estimates identified €2.2 billion of expenditure directly related to COVID-19. A detailed breakdown of the type of COVID-19 expenditure is shown in Table 1.2. Most of the expenditure is related to vaccinations and testing costs. Detailed explanations of the classifications in Table 1.2 are provided in the background notes.
