The local government sector (S.1313) comprises all Local Authorities, Regional Assemblies and a number of Approved Housing Bodies.
An annual survey of all local authorities is conducted jointly by the CSO and the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
This survey updates entity listings. It also obtains extra information required to establish the statistical classification of all bodies under the aegis of local authorities. The following tables lists the entities under the aegis of local authorities. The statistical classification process is outlined in the Background Notes.
A complete list of the Register is available on the Register of Public Sector Bodies - Provisional Table 1.1 (XLS 50KB) . Figure 2.1 in the Public Sector chapter displays a breakdown of the Register by subsector.
A CSV file is also available on the Register of Public Sector Bodies - Provisional Table 1.1 csv file.
Local Authorities, covering 31 city and county councils, operate under the aegis of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. The data on local authorities was compiled from a survey held in May 2022 for the reference year 2020. See Background Notes for more information.
Regional Assemblies operate under the aegis of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. They have a range of powers in relation to spatial planning and economic development. The Regional Assemblies source European funding for Regional Programmes, promote coordinated public services, monitor proposals which may impact on their areas, and advise public bodies of the regional implications of their policies and plans.
Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs) operate under the aegis of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. There are 49 AHBs classified in the local government sector. See Background Notes for further information.
