Why we travelled

Work related journeys comprised a greater percentage of total journeys for males (27.5%) than was the case for females (22.4%). Males were also more likely to undertake a journey for the purpose of entertainment, sports or leisure (10.6%) than females (9.1%). However, females were more likely to make a journey for the purpose of accompanying another person (18.1%).

Table 3.2 shows the distribution of journeys by degree of urbanisation. Where a person lives does not seem to have any significant effect on the reasons for making journeys.

The proportion of people in 2013 whose journeys were undertaken for work related reasons was highest amongst 18-34 year olds (31.6%).  Journeys made for the purpose of education showed a similar trend with 8.1% of all journeys made by 18-34 year olds for this purpose. The 35-54 age group were twice as likely to have made a companion/escort journey as other age groups. Over one fifth of all journeys (22.1%) made by 35-54 year olds were companion/escort journeys.
