Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (06 November 2025) published Milk Statistics for September 2025.

Commenting on the release, Stephanie Kelleher, Statistician in the Agriculture Section of the CSO, said: “Today’s figures show that the Domestic Milk Intake in September 2025 by milk processors and co-ops rose by 7 million litres, or 0.9%, compared with the same month in 2024. Production of Skimmed Milk Powder was up by 2,200 tonnes, from 10,900 tonnes in September 2024 to 13,100 tonnes in September 2025.

Looking at Q3 2025, Domestic Milk Intake was at 2.72 billion litres, a rise of 3.7% compared with the corresponding value between July and September 2024. When compared with Q3 2023, Domestic Milk Intake was up 37 million litres (+1.4%). Quarterly Skimmed Milk Powder production increased by 6,400 tonnes, from 38,400 tonnes in Q3 2024 to 44,700 tonnes in Q3 2025.

50 Years of Domestic Milk Intake Data

Analysing 50 years of Domestic Milk Intake data, Figure 2 shows Domestic Milk Intake for each September from 1975 to 2025.  We can see that Domestic Milk Intake more than doubled over this period increasing from 310.8 million litres in September 1975 to 774.7 million litres in September 2025.

It is also interesting to note the impact of the introduction and abolition of the European milk quota on milk production. The quota was introduced in April 1984 and abolished in April 2015 - Domestic Milk Intake increased as a result. The highest figure for the month of September was in September 2022 at 785.6 million litres."

Editor's Note

Since the January 2025 release, the format of the Milk Statistics release has been updated. The main tables and associated PxStat tables remain the same, but the Statistician’s Comment is included at the end of the quarter only.

The quarterly releases may provide additional charts and tables.

As this is a new approach for CSO Statistical Releases, we welcome feedback on the initiative from users of the release. Please contact us with your comments by email to milk@cso.ie
