1 Data refer to the 12 months up to April of each year and is preliminary for years 2012 to 2015.
2 Net migration is the number of inward migrants (immigrants) less outward migrants (emigrants).
  • Annual immigration into Ireland rose from 107,800 people in 2006 to peak at 151,100 in 2007 before falling back sharply to 41,800 in 2010. Since then immigration has climbed steadily to 69,300 in 2015.
  • The level of annual emigration out of Ireland was 36,000 in 2006 and it increased strongly over the next eight years to 89,000 in 2013 before falling back slightly to 80,900 in 2015.
  • The combined effect of these changes in immigration and emigration was that net migration turned from positive to negative in 2010 (i.e., more people left the country than arrived) and it has remained negative since then.
  • The number of births grew from 61,200 in 2006 to 77,200 in 2010 before falling down to 67,000 in 2015 while the number of deaths increased from 27,000 in 2006 to 29,600 in 2015.
  • The natural increase in the population (i.e., births less deaths), increased from 34,200 in 2006 to 48,800 in 2010 before falling to 37,400 in 2015.
  • The annual change in the population was over 100,000 during 2006, 2007 and 2008 but in recent years the change has been much smaller, with 25,800 people added to the population in 2015.
