  • The number of dangerous or negligent acts fell by 53% from 2009 to 2014, falling from 15,532 recorded offences in 2009 to 7,299 in 2014. These offences are mainly concerned with drink driving.
  • Public order and other social code offences decreased by 43%, from 57,351 in 2009 to 32,629 by 2014. Most of the offences in this grouping are ones of disorderly conduct.
  • Weapons and explosives offences fell by 39%, down from 4,064 offences in 2009 to 2,475 in 2014.
  • Between 2009 and 2014 the number of sexual offences rose by 40%, up from 1,480 recorded offences in 2009 to 2,065 in 2014.

  • The detection rate for kidnapping and related offences rose by 18 percentage points between 2009 and 2013 while the rate for homicide offences rose by 3 percentage points.
  • The detection rates for fraud, deception and related offences fell by 14 percentage points and the rate for robbery, extortion and hijacking offences fell by 11 percentage points over the same time period.
  • Certain crimes, by their nature, are detected more frequently than others, such as dangerous or negligent acts (which are mainly speeding offences), road and traffic offences and controlled drug offences.
