Absences from Work and Hours Worked

LFS estimates were updated on 22nd Feb 2024 to incorporate updated population estimates for the period 2016 Q3 to 2023 Q3, based on the results of Census 2022. LFS results are updated in this way following each Census of Population. For further information see Background Notes.

Absences from Work and Hours Worked

There were 5,900 more absences recorded in the reference week for Q2 2023 compared with a year earlier

Absences from Work and Hours Worked Totals

There were 2,643,000 persons aged 15-89 years in employment in Q2 2023. Of those who were in employment, an estimated 193,100 (7.3%) were absent from work during the reference week (i.e. temporarily absent from work for reasons such as holidays, sick leave or maternity leave). This compares with 187,200 (7.3%) 12 months earlier.

Overall employment was up compared to Q2 2022, while the number of absences from work during the reference week also increased. This resulted in the number of employed persons who were at work during the reference week increasing by 3.5% (+82,500) over the year. The estimated total number of hours worked per week in Q2 2023 stood at 84.1 million hours, up by 1.1 million hours or 1.3% on Q2 2022, and 8.2 million hours (+10.8%) on Q2 2021. See Table 6.1.

Absences from work by Economic sector

The rate of absences from work during the reference week varied across different industrial (NACE) sectors in the year to Q2 2023 – notable changes were seen in:

  • The Construction sector where the rate of absence was 6.3% in Q2 2023, up from 4.7% in Q2 2022
  • The Financial, Insurance & Real Estate Activities sector which saw the rate of absence at 6.3%, down from 8.2% in Q2 2022

Total Actual Hours Worked by Economic sector

Large year-on-year differences in hours worked observed in some NACE sectors over recent quarters are less evident in Q2 2023. Of note were:

  • The Public Administration and Defence; Compulsory Social Security Activities sector, where the number of hours worked per week was 4.7 million in Q2 2023, up from 4.2 million in Q2 2022 – 4.5 million hours were worked in Q2 2021
  • The Other Services Activities (R-U) sector saw a large increase in percentage change in the number of hours worked per week - 3.2 million in Q2 2023, compared to 3.0 million in Q2 2022 and 2.4 million in Q2 2021
  • The Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing sector, where the number of hours worked per week in Q2 2023 decreased to 4.5 million from 4.8 million in Q2 2022 and 5.0 million in Q2 2021
