Generative AI, or GenAI for short, is a form of Artificial Intelligence designed to generate human-like content, which can be text, audio, images, videos, programming code, etc. GenAI tools include ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, LLaMA, Midjourney, DALL-E, Synthesia, etc.

In the 2025 ICT Household Survey, new questions were introduced on the prevalence of the use of GenAI to create content – text, images, programming code, videos, etc.

Note: The data presented in this release relates to individuals aged 16 years and over who used the internet in the three months prior to completing the survey.

Younger males most likely to use GenAI

At an overall level, over four in ten (42%) internet users had used generative AI (GenAI) in some form in the three months prior to completing the survey. Males were more likely than females to use GenAI at 47% compared with 37% of females.

Younger males aged 16 to 29 years were most likely to have used GenAI. More than seven in ten (72%) had used GenAI tools such as ChatGPT, CoPilot, etc.

One in eleven (9%) older males aged 75 years and over had used GenAI compared with just 2% of females in the same age group.

Analysis by principal economic status shows that students were most likely to use GenAI tools at 66% compared with 46% of people whose principal economic status was employee.

Of those who had used GenAI in the previous three months, half had used in for professional/work purposes, while 28% had used it for educational purposes. Almost seven in ten (69%) had used it for private purpose. Respondents could choose more than one option.

For those who had not used GenAI, over half (54%) stated they had no need to use it, while 20% did not know how to use GenAI and a further one in five (19%) had concerns around the security/privacy/safety of using GenAI tools.

Females had more security, safety, or privacy concerns about using GenAI tools. Almost one in four (24%) females had such concerns compared with just 13% of males.
