Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (27 February 2026) published statistics on Irish Babies’ Names 2025.
Commenting on the trends in Irish baby names, Seán O’Connor, Statistician in the Vital Statistics Section of the CSO, said: “Rían was the most popular baby boys’ name in Ireland in 2025 and reached the top spot for the first time since our series began in 1964. It has been increasing in popularity since 2018 and entered the top five in 2021. It was also the first time since 2018, when the CSO started including names with the síneadh fadas, that a name with a fada reached the top spot.
Rían knocked Jack into second position, having previously held the top spot every year since 2007, with the exception of 2016, when it was pushed into second place by James. In fact, Jack and James have been in the top five boys’ names since 1998. The top five boys’ names in 2025 were Rían, Jack, Noah, James, and Oisín.
Looking at girls’ names, Lily claimed the number one position as most popular girls’ name in Ireland for the first time since our series began in 1964. Lily first started to gain popularity in 1997 when 15 girls were given the name, and it has been steadily climbing up the ranks since then. It first appeared in the top 10 in 2011 and in 2025 it replaced Sophie as the most popular name for girls. The top five names for girls in 2025 were Lily, Éabha, Fiadh, Grace, and Sadie.
There is more variety when it comes to the top spot for girls. In 2025, Lily was the most popular girls' name, while in 2024 it was Sophie, and in 2023 it was Grace. The 2025 ranking was the first time Sophie placed outside the top five since 2008. Éabha retained its second-place ranking since 2024, while Sadie entered the top five girls' names in 2025 for the very first time.
New Entrants to the Top 100
