More households with expenses exceeding income

Online ISSN: 2712-0066
CSO statistical release, , 11am

In 2023, 13.6% of households reported that their expenses exceeded their income in the previous 12 months. This was almost double the number in 2020 when 7.5% said so. See figure 9.1 and PxStat table HFC2066.

The households who said that expenses were less than income were then asked to list their most important reasons for saving (households could list multiple reasons for saving). The share of households saving for the provision of unexpected events peaked in 2020 at 59.1%, possibly due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, and in 2023 it dropped to 54%. The share of households saving to purchase their own home has been steadily increasing since 2018, when it was 18.2%, rising to 21.3% in 2023. See figure 9.2 and PxStat table HFC2067.
