Ten years after graduation 88% of Irish nursing and midwifery graduates who participated in Census 2022 worked as Nurses & Midwives

Information Note on Linking to Census 2022

Irish healthcare graduates with a valid PPSN were matched to a pseudonymised copy of the Census of Population Analysis 2022 dataset held internally within the CSO to provide additional insights on healthcare graduates to users. The results presented in this chapter show the occupations and place of work for healthcare graduates who participated in Census 2022 and their present principal status was working for payment or profit. Refer to the Background Notes for more information.

Graduate Occupations

Some 88% of Irish nursing and midwifery graduates from 2012 who participated in Census 2022 worked as Nurses & Midwives 10 years after graduation. The remaining graduates mainly worked as Managers, Directors and Senior Officials (2%), in Associated Professional & Technical Occupations (2%) and as Teaching & Educational Professionals (2%).

Some 95% of Irish medicine graduates from 2012 who participated in Census 2022 worked as Medical Practitioners 10 years after graduation. The remaining graduates worked as Managers, Directors & Senior Officials and as Teaching & Educational Professionals (2%). 

All dentistry graduates from 2012 who participated in Census 2022, worked as Dentists 10 years after graduation.

Of all speech and language therapy graduates from 2012 who participated in Census 2022, 89% worked in their respective field after 10 years. The remaining graduates worked as Business, Media and Public Service Professionals (5%) and in Associated Professional & Technical Occupations (5%).

Location of Employment

Figure 5.2 shows the HSE health region where graduates work for those who participated in Census 2022. The information comes from the place of work question on Census 2022 and is aggregated to the HSE health regions. More information on the HSE health regions is provided in the Background Notes.

The region where the most nursing and midwifery graduates worked was the HSE Dublin & North East region with 1,506 of those who graduated between 2010 and 2017 working there. The region where the least nursing and midwifery graduates worked was the HSE Midwest region with 603 of those who graduated between 2010 and 2017 working there. 

The region where the most medicine graduates work was the HSE Dublin & South East region with 555 of those who graduated between 2010 and 2017 working there. The region where the least medicine graduates work was the HSE Midwest region with 102 of those who graduated between 2010 and 2017 working there.
