This release includes changes to the methodology used to breakdown unallocated or unknown products in trade in goods statistics. This new methodology has been applied to data from January 2021 onwards. In addition, changes have been made to the method for allocating partner country for estimated data. Please see the Information Note.
Unadjusted goods exports were €15.1 billion in April 2023, a decrease of €2.1 billion compared with April last year.
Unadjusted goods imports were €11.4 billion, which was €80 million more than imports in April 2022.
Seasonally adjusted goods exports were €16.3 billion in April 2023, a decline of over €300 million compared with March 2023.
Seasonally adjusted goods imports were €12.1 billion in April 2023.
Imports from Great Britain were €1.9 billion in April 2023, while exports to Great Britain were €1.2 billion.

Seasonally adjusted goods exports fell by €305 million (-2%) to €16,289 million in April 2023 compared with March 2023, according to preliminary figures.
Seasonally adjusted goods imports grew by €1,049 million (+9%) to €12,109 million leading to a decrease of €1,355 million (-24%) in the seasonally adjusted trade surplus to €4,180 million in April 2023 compared with March 2023 (See Table 2). Seasonal adjustment compares month-to-month data by removing fluctuations that may occur due to seasonal patterns in trade.

The (unadjusted) value of goods exports fell by €2,115 million (-12%) to €15,093 million in April 2023 compared with April 2022. The value of goods exports for the period January to April 2023 was down by €3,593 million (-5%) to €65,815 million, when compared with the same period of 2022.
The (unadjusted) value of goods imports increased by €80 million (+1%) to €11,364 million in April 2023 compared with April 2022. The value of goods imports for the first four months of 2023 increased by €4,589 million (+11%) to €46,306 million, when compared with the same period of 2022.
Exports to Great Britain were €1,221 million, which was 8% of total exports in April 2023. The products which accounted for the largest share of exports were Chemicals & Related Products at €363 million and Food & Live Animals with €329 million.
Imports from Great Britain in April 2023 were €1,873 million, which was 16% of the total value of imports. Imports of Mineral Fuels, Lubricants & Related Materials were valued at €473 million, and imports of Chemicals & Related Products accounted for €523 million (See Table 5).
The EU accounted for €6,431 million (43%) of total goods exports in April 2023, of which €2,123 million went to Belgium, €1,388 million went to the Netherlands and €1,020 million went to Germany.
The USA was the main non-EU destination accounting for €4,176 million (28%) of total exports in April 2023 (See Table 4).

Exports of Medical & Pharmaceutical Products decreased by €1,578 million (-23%) to €5,314 million in April 2023 compared with April 2022. This represented 35% of total exports.
Exports of Electrical Machinery, Apparatus & Appliances fell by €416 million (-36%) to €753 million.
Exports of Professional, Scientific & Controlling Apparatus grew by €97 million (+14%) to €773 million.
Exports of Organic Chemicals decreased by €156 million (-5%) to €2,937 million in April 2023 compared with April 2022 (See Table 3).
Imports of Other Transport Equipment (including Aircraft) were up by €398 million (+35%) to €1,522 million in April 2023 compared with April 2022.
Imports of Mineral Fuels, Lubricants & Related Materials decreased by €424 million (-33%) to €873 million.
Imports of Electrical Machinery, Apparatus & Appliances fell by €132 million (-16%) to €693 million.
Imports of Organic Chemicals were up by €309 million (+25%) to €1,540 million.
The value of goods imports for April 2023 excluding SITC 79 (Other Transport Equipment, Including Aircraft) fell by €318 million (-3%) to €9,842 million, compared with the corresponding April 2022 figure of €10,160 million (See Table 3).

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (21 June 2023) released Goods Exports and Imports April 2023.
Commenting on the release, Ciarán Counihan, Statistician in the International Trade in Goods Division said: “In April 2023, Ireland’s unadjusted exports of goods decreased by €2.1 billion to €15.1 billion compared with April 2022. When seasonally adjusted, exports of goods fell by over €300 million compared with March 2023.
The unadjusted imports for April 2023 were valued at €11.4 billion, an increase of €80 million on April 2022. Seasonally adjusted imports were €12.1 billion in April 2023.
Comparing the first four months of 2023 with the same period in 2022, exports of goods were down 5%, and the value of imports increased by 11%. Exports for the first four months of 2023 were almost €66 billion.
Imports from Great Britain fell by 9% to €1.9 billion in April 2023 compared with April 2022, and the largest decrease was in the imports of Mineral Fuels, Lubricants & Related Materials which fell by 43%.
Exports to Great Britain fell by 22% to €1.2 billion in April 2023 from April 2022.”
