Roundwood removals decreased 4% from 4.3 million cubic metres in 2021 to 4.1 million cubic metres in 2022.
The total value of roundwood removals was €251 million in 2022, an 11% increase from €227 million in 2021.
Removals from privately-owned forest was 1.8 million cubic metres in 2022, a 16% decrease from 2.1 million cubic metres in 2021.
In 2022 removals from public forests comprised 57% of the total removals volume, compared with 52% in 2021.
Coniferous roundwood accounted for over 99% of removals in 2022.
Large sawlog accounted for the highest proportion of roundwood removals volume at 38% in 2022, followed by pulpwood (27%) and small sawlog (26%).
In the publicly-owned forest category, only removals of publicly-owned trees are included. See Background Notes for product definitions.

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (19 July 2023) published Forest Wood Removals 2022.
Commenting on the release Niamh Shanahan, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division, said: "In 2022 the volume of roundwood removals was 4.1 million cubic metres (See Table 1A). This was a decrease of 4% compared with 2021 roundwood removals of 4.3 million cubic metres. Removals from privately-owned forests decreased 16% compared with 2021, while removals from publicly-owned forests increased by 6%. Coniferous roundwood accounted for 99% of removals in 2022 (See Table 1B).
Removals from publicly-owned forests made up 57% of 2022 roundwood removals volume (2.4 million cubic metres) with the remainder from privately-owned forests (See Figure 1, Tables 1D, and 1E). In 2021, removals from publicly-owned forests comprised 52% of the total removals volume.
The total value of removals in 2022 was €251 million which was an 11% increase from 2021 (See Table 1A). This contrasted with the 4% decrease in removals volume.
Large sawlog accounted for the highest proportion of roundwood removals volume at 38% in 2022, followed by pulpwood (27%) and small sawlog (26%) (See Figure 2 and Table 3A). In 2021, large sawlog contributed to 40% of roundwood removals with small sawlog at 26% and pulpwood at 25%. These three products contributed to around 91% of annual roundwood removals volume."
