Land Utilisation

  • There was almost 5 million hectares of Agricultural Area Used (AAU) in 2013 in Ireland, including 423,000 hectares of commonage.
  • Almost 3.7 million hectares was Grassland, with the remaining composed of Rough Grazing (450,300 hectares), Cereals (307,800 hectares) and Other Crops, Fruit and Horticulture (83,500 hectares).
  • Almost two thirds (277,100 hectares) of the total commonage was located in the BMW region.
  • Just over one half (54.2%) of the AAU was located in the SE Region.
  • The SE region contained almost 80% of the total land devoted to cereals.
