While gender representation across total employments was split relatively equally in 2023, there were considerable differences in terms of the top earners. Almost three-quarters of employments with earnings in the top 1% were held by men. However, the proportion of women in employments with earnings in the top 1% has risen from around 21% in 2018 to 26% in 2023.
As you might expect, in the Construction sector, men accounted for 86% of the total employments and 95% of the top earners. But in sectors such as Education and Health, where the total workforce was mainly women, men accounted for around two-thirds of the top earners.
Looking at the distribution of earnings by region, Dublin had the highest median annual earnings in 2023 at almost €48,000. This was almost €13,000 more per year than those in Donegal which had the lowest annual earnings. When it comes to the very high earners, over half of the employments in the top 1% of earnings lived in Dublin, while the Border and Midlands regions had the lowest proportion of higher earners.
