The following audio files contain quotes from CSO Statistician Maria Yasin about Ireland and Northern Ireland - A Joint Census Publication 2021/2022.
Media outlets have permission to use the clip as long as they credit the CSO.
Our release covers census results for both Ireland and Northern Ireland offering a comprehensive look at statistics across the island of Ireland in 2021 and 2022.
We compare trends, similarities and differences, analysing key topics such as demographics, households, ethnicity, place of birth, religion, health, caregiving, and employment.
The population of the island of Ireland was almost 7.1 million in 2022, exceeding 7 million people for the first time since 1851. The median age of the population was 38 years in Ireland and 40 years in Northern Ireland, which were both below the EU average of 44 years.
Our findings showed similarities across areas such as marital status, top industries for employment, and owner-occupied households.
There were also notable differences in the areas of population density and growth, and caregiving.
This was the second time the CSO and NISRA produced a joint Census publication and none of this would have been possible without the public completing their census forms.
