The cost of energy purchases by enterprises in 2020 was €5.9 billion of which 57% was paid for by firms in the Services sector (see Table 1B).
There was a decrease of 59% in the use of jet kerosene by airlines in 2020 compared with 2019 due to travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic (see Table 2A).
Purchases of electricity and natural gas accounted for 64% of total energy costs incurred by enterprises in 2020 (see Table 2C and Figure 1).
The proportion of total energy (in terms of kilotonnes of oil equivalent) purchased by the Services sector decreased from 53% in 2019 to 39% in 2020 (see Table 1A).
The use of renewable energy (in ktoe) purchased directly by enterprises increased by 40% between 2011 and 2020 (see Table 2A).
Enterprises with their headquarters based in Dublin used 64% of total energy consumption by enterprises in 2020 (see Table 7A).
This release is based on the energy purchase costs of Industry and Services enterprises resident in Ireland. Energy purchased abroad by enterprises resident in Ireland is included e.g. fuel purchased by an Irish resident airline in other countries. Energy purchased in Ireland by foreign resident enterprises is not included e.g. purchases of autodiesel by a foreign registered vehicle. See Background Notes for more information.

Statistician's Comment
Commenting on the release Dympna Corry, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division, said: "The cost of purchases of electricity and natural gas amounted to 64% of the total cost of energy purchases by enterprises in the Industry and Services sectors in 2020. In terms of the quantity of energy consumed (in kilotonnes of oil equivalent), the total share by the Services sector increased from 45% in 2011 to 53% in 2019 and then decreased to 39% in 2020. The fall in the share accounted for by the Services sector was due to a 59% decrease in the use of jet kerosene due to travel restrictions arising from Covid-19.
Fuel Types
Wood biomass (woodpellet, woodchip, woodlog and woodwaste) was 53% of the quantity of renewable energy purchased directly by enterprises in 2020 (this excludes purchases of metered electricity that was generated from renewable sources). The total quantity of renewable energy purchased by enterprises in the Industry and Services sectors was 40% higher in 2020 compared with 2011.
Purchases of coal increased by 10% from 395,000 tonnes in 2019 to 436,000 tonnes in 2020 - this was mainly for use in power plants to generate electricity. Peat decreased by 45% from 2.2 million tonnes in 2019 to 1.2 million tonnes in 2020 - the main use of peat was by power plants to generate electricity. The quantity of electricity from wind turbines generated and consumed onsite in the Industry and Services sectors increased by 33% between 2018 and 2020.
The share of energy, in terms of ktoe, accounted for by enterprises in the Emissions Trading Scheme increased from 46% in 2011 to 51% in 2020."
