The income of aircraft leasing companies stood at €21.9bn in 2024, up 54.2% from €14.2bn in 2014. Expenses rose by 66.4% during the same period, to €19.8bn in 2024. The sharpest changes in profits came in 2020 and 2022. During 2020, profits fell 61% compared to the previous year. In 2022, they increased 137% compared to 2021.

The income figures shown in this chapter are exclusive of income on derivatives, given that this category is considered to be independent of the ordinary operation of aircraft leasing companies. For the same reason, capital gains/losses are excluded from expenditure figures. Expenditure figures shown are inclusive of interest and tax.
Aircraft leasing companies have earned the majority of their income in their primary activity of the operational leasing of aircrafts. This activity has generated a total of €205.0bn for the industry during the period 2014 to 2024. In 2024, operational leasing income stood at €19.5bn, rising 59.0% from €12.3bn in 2014.

In 2017 and 2018, 15.5% of all income came from sources other than aircraft leasing, its highest over the 10-year period. In total, €29.4bn of income came from sources other than the primary activity between 2014 and 2024.
Since 2014, the most important regional sources of operational leasing income have been Asia at 41.2%, followed by Europe at 36.2%. The industry has generated €205.0bn in operational leasing income during the period under investigation.

By country, China has been the most significant source of operational leasing income, providing 9.0% of all operational leasing income between 2014 and 2024. The next largest country was Ireland at 7.6%, followed by the United States at 6.9%.

The highest cost to the industry in 2024 has been interest, standing at €7.8bn. This was followed by depreciation at €7.5bn. Depreciation is an accounting cost which reflects the reduction in value of the aircraft leased by the company, over its useful life. Other operating costs – inclusive of tax, and wages and salaries – stood at €4.5bn in 2024.
