Waste Generation Survey

Survey purpose and legal basis

The purpose of this survey is to collect information on waste generated by the non-domestic sector in 2022.

The 2022 Waste Generation Survey is being conducted under the Statistics (Waste Generation and Treatment Survey) Order 2023 (S.I. No. 394 of 2023), which was made under the Statistics Act, 1993. Under Sections 26 and 27 of the Statistics Act, 1993, you are obliged by law to complete and return the form. The statistics are required under EU Regulation (EC) No. 2150/2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 November 2002.

Who uses the results?

The data collected in this survey will be made available to Eurostat and will be published nationally at an aggregated level only. We will ensure that it is not possible to identify an individual person or business from the data we publish or share.

Is your personal data confidential and how long will the data be retained?

All information supplied to the CSO is treated as strictly confidential in accordance with Section 33 of the Statistics Act, 1993, and will be used for statistical purposes only. Aggregate data will be made available to Eurostat to meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 2150/2002.

We will retain the survey data indefinitely as one of the purposes of the data collection is to obtain longitudinal information on waste generation by Irish businesses.
