Pig Survey

Survey purpose and legal basis

The purpose of the Pig Survey is to compile data on the total number of pigs in the country, broken down into breeding stock and fatteners and their respective subcategories.

The principal outputs are the number of pigs in the state, broken into breeding and other pig categories. 

The Pig Survey is a survey that is carried out biannually under Section 24 of the Statistics Act, 1993. Participation in the survey is voluntary.

This survey is conducted to comply with the requirements of Regulation (EC) No 1165/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning livestock and meat statistics.

Who uses the results?

Our results are only ever made available in aggregate form and we make sure that it is impossible for individuals or farms to be identified. The data is used extensively by national and international agricultural agencies, Eurostat, and Government Departments.

Is your personal data confidential and how long will the data be retained?

Yes. All information supplied to the CSO is treated as strictly confidential. The Statistics Act, 1993 sets stringent confidentiality standards. Information collected may be used only for statistical purposes, and no details related to an identifiable person or farm may be divulged to any other Government Department or body.

The data will be securely held for a maximum of ten years from the date of issue of this survey and can only be used for statistical purposes.
